MY ROOM IS A MESS! HELP!?

I am 14, i have a desk, a twin bed, a vanity, 2 closets, one bookshelf, one chair, a giant 64" window and a nightstand. i have 100 energy drink cans 30 care bears, and a HUGE collection of jewelry. my room is boring, and a mess. posters cover ALL my walls. but i don't like it any more. i just need some tips for cleaning out all my junk, what i should do for my posters and other collections, and i wanna know if i have too much furniture in my room [it fits nice... but it makes me feel cluttered] i also need a plain color layout. i have purple blankets, this old person gray style curtains, a lime green shaggy rug, a black and gold octagon rug, they vanity is old style, and doesn't fit anything. my room is just tacky!!!! help!!!

The first step is to bring a couple of empty laundry baskets and garbage bags into your room and begin sorting. Decide on what you need to keep, what you want to keep, and what should be thrown away, recycled or donated. Take anything that is in good condition that you haven't enjoyed for six months or longer and put it in the donation basket. This should include clothing that you've outgrown or lost interest in, books, toys, video games, DVDs, and jewelry. Do not put expensive or special items like family heirlooms in this pile, even if you don't like them as much anymore. Instead put them along with other items that you want to keep but don't have the space for in your room any longer in another basket. Throw away old school work that you really don't need to keep any more. Put all magazines older than 2 months that you've already read into a recycling in bags to take to your recycling bin unless you plan on making a collage out of them or they have articles you really want to read again. Carefully take all the posters off your wall. If you no longer like them at all, either put them in the pile to be donated or in a trash bag. If you do still like them, pick one to keep on your bedroom room wall and hang the others up on the inside of your closet or to roll up and keep under your bed. When you get tired of the poster you've got on the wall you can switch it out for one of the others. I'd recycle the energy cans.

If you really love the Care Bears and don't want to part with them, find a way to contain them neatly in one area of your room or in a storage bin. I have a little white wicker chair from my childhood nursery filled with bears, and having them all in one place makes them look like the cherished keepsakes that they are and keeps my room from looking like it's been overtaken by them. Depending on how spacious your bookshelves are, you could mix a few bears in with the books sort of like little dividers / bookends, and then put the rest on the bottom two shelves.

One of the tricks for maximizing space in a tiny dorm room is to elevate the bed so you can store things under it. You can get inexpensive bed lifters at hardware stores. They just lift your bed a couple of inches off the floor so you have more space to slide things under it. Get a couple of under-the-bed storage containers and neatly fill them with the things you want to keep in your room but no longer want to be visible. You can also store out-of-season clothes in these containers. If your bedskirt is too short to cover up the space under your bed, either get a larger one or pick something else you could use in its place, like a pretty sheet or a wall tapestry. You could also just get cute storage bins that you wouldn't mind having on display. Ask your parents if you can store other things that won't fit under your bed or on your closet shelves in other parts of the house.

Do you really need the desk and the vanity? Since your room is small and the vanity doesn't match the rest your furniture, you could take it out of the room and donate it or find another purpose for it in your house. If it's got a mirror that can be removed you could take it off and hang on the wall above your desk or elsewhere in the room. Mirrors are wonderful in a room because they make it appear to be bigger and they bounce light around. You could also get a small makeup mirror for your desk to make it dual purpose. At my college a lot of people have a colorful storage container from Costco to house their makeup, art and school supplies and other materials. If you do want to keep the vanity, then consider painting it to have it match the rest of your room. If you have the space in one of your closets you could take the doors off and fit the vanity inside of it to sort of create an old Hollywood dressing room area.

Ask your parents if you can get new bedding, curtains and a rug or two for your room. You could save your allowance or get a job like babysitting to help pay for them. Macy's has a Teen Vogue line that has appealing, colorful bedding and fun accessories. Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Delias's and Urban Outfitters also have cute, relatively affordable bedding and decor items for teens. If you can't buy new things, find ways to work with what you've got. I'd take the black and gold rug out of the room. If the curtain rod is sturdy you could hang something from the end of it like a plant, a hanging photo frame, or something colorful and artistic. Look for a throw pillow with gray, purple and green in it to help tie the whole room together. Give your room a fresh coat of paint if you're allowed. Since darker colors will make your room look smaller, look for a lighter shade. A pale lavender with a hint of gray would be pretty.

Best of luck organizing and decorating!
