Decorate Your Small Room With These Five Simple Tips
A small room shouldn’t lack in style for that simple reason. There are plenty of ways that you can make your room look more stylish and make it functional through decorating. Here are a few tips on how to decorate the small rooms of your home that will allow you to best utilize space while keeping it stylish.
Paint an Accent Wall
Consider painting a single wall in the room in a bold color so that it may act as an accent wall. Not only does this make the room appear larger but it also gives it a stylish feel. Make sure that the other walls are painted in a complimentary color so that the single bold wall doesn’t seem out of place.
Though, you should really stay away from dark colors. Avoid colors like black, dark blue, red and dark green if you are going to paint your accent wall a bold color. You choice should fall along a color like pink, yellow or aquamarine instead. Painting a small room in dark colors only visually diminishes the size of the area.
Choose Furniture that Fits the Size of Your Room
Furniture should be in scale. This means not having something like a huge bed take up most of the room. The same rules apply to the family room. Look for pieces of furniture that don’t overpower the whole room and fit well. You will definitely want to be able to walk around in your own room without having to bump into every single piece of furniture.
Find Furniture that Works as Storage, Too
Another tip for choosing furniture is finding pieces that can pull double duty in a small room. Wooden chests and similar pieces are great for pulling double duty as they can be used like a coffee table or side table and can also be used as storage for other items in the room. This will mean that your small space will be left with more room and you will be able to sneak in more storage space.
Make sure to use up as much of your vertical space as possible. By maximizing the height of your walls, you are adding lots more storage and design space to the room. Bookshelves and armoires work as great vertical storage pieces.
Another great idea is shelving that is attached to the wall. Design and functional space would be the functions of the shelving. The shelves are the right place to add style to the area if you place some of your knickknacks and books in an interesting manner.
Let in Some Light to Open Up a Room
Your room should get as much natural light as possible. A room looks bigger and brighter with natural light. Keep your window treatments simple with something like a pair of plain drapes or blinds. Adding mirrors to the walls will reflect light in the room and make it look even larger.
Choose Lighting that Doesn't Overwhelm the Space
You should avoid any really large lighting fixtures or any fixtures that hang down. Without having to take up much space and keeping the room well lit, track lighting is a great idea to go with.
When you are working with a small space you should worry about it being hard or boring. If you keep things simple and functional while adding small aspect of your style to the room, you will begin to really enjoy your small space as much as possible.
